Right now there are several formats but two major formats that are being used by several reading devices. If you are very serious about your book to really sell and continue selling for a long time you have to produce it in one of these two formats.
Kindle as you know is Amazon’s ebook format and most popular right now. But for you to get your book published in Kindle format you will not have page number like a hard cover book. Ebooks compatible to Kindle format do not have:

- Images of any kind
- has Build in dictionary
- Connects to wikipedia
- Have another feature called Nownow, it is a search service
- It’s battery is to be charged after almost every 24 hours.
The next format, is named as ePub. This is the format of all other major players for the reading devices. apple’s iBook store, Barnes Nobles Nook Store, Sony’s reader store and Borders Kobo store, all have ePub format.
if you need to make your epub document there are a number of open source programs out there that simplifies the process. Calibre, is supposed to be a very efficient to create ePub. Calibre is a book management program that supports a huge variety of file formats including Rich Format Text, as well as PDF.
Therefore, with the information technology revolution once you write, self publish your ebook and are looking forward to make a continuous income with it for several years to come make sure to publish it in the most lasting format which I feel right now is Kindle. If that is hard andyou want to use good old computer for your ebook then PDF is the easiest format.

As I told on a previous comment, Information Sells! And if you can give the information that someone wants immediately the better it is. People want the information NOW! Thats one of the reasons why people are buying ebooks. Because you can start reading the information after SECONDS you’ve purchased the information. Unlike books it can take up to 1-3 weeks to get the information on your hands and that too late!
But of course you can find paid information not only as an ebook but also on any normal website. There are many newspaper companies (or similar services)that charge a monthly fee in order to read the news/content etc.
Forums or even blogs can be also used as a membership (paid) website with content (information). Of course you have to find first a market that is “hungry” to get the information. At first you have to give LOTS of free information on your blog or forum and after creating a “database” of valuable content you can start charging some content and perhaps even charging all the information on the website etc.
Before, you could find “information” on the internet with your computer and the library.
Imagine now how much more audience you can have with devices such as Amazon Kindle, Apple iPad, Barnes & Noble Nook, Sony Readers, Mobile Phone etc! Information can be accessible EVERYWHERE!
All it needs to make money is to sell the information to the correct people that are desperate to find the information when s/he needs it.
Information is here to stay. It just gets easier to spreed by the time and more people will pay for good information.
