Introduction and History Of Thanksgiving

The first Thanks giving day and Thanksgiving dinner was celebrated officially by Governor William Bradford in Plymouth Plantation Massachusetts.  This celebration occurred in 1621, after the first harvest of the colonists, four men were sent out for fowling on the Thanks Giving Day, around September 30th.  The menu for the Thanks giving Dinner was fish, eel, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, clams, and plums.

Governor William Bradford entertained  “greatest king Massaoyl” and the native Indians (Wampanoag Indians tribe) in this first Thanks Giving Dinner.  This feast lasted three days.

In 1623. After a horrible drought caused the actual celebration. “Thanksgiving” occurred and it was called thanksgiving because the drought finally came to an end after a period of intense praying by the colonists.

In 1644, after almost twenty years , New York celebrated Thanks giving, after Dutch citizens of New York killed nearly 600 Indians and then marched home and “cheerfully” ate the Thanksgiving Dinner.  There was a big menu with lots of extremely rich dishes, like “pumpion pye” .  That was the name of the pumpkin pies in those days, other entrees cooked with rosemary, parsley, sweet marjoram, nutmeg, pepper, six cloves, etc.

In 1895, there was another Thanks giving dinner held and menu was Oyster soups, Bread sticks, olives, celery, chicken pie, creamed macroni and cheese, sweet potato, squash, turnips, cranberry sauce, lettuce salad, French dressing minced pie, and apple pie.

After sometime it became a yearly celebration and everyone started celebrating thanksgiving as American Holiday  On the fourth Thursday in November, everyone sits down with their loved ones to celebrate Thanksgiving.  A day of expressing thanks to all for all the wonderful things in our lives, like Turkey, mashed potatoes, football, the Macys day Parade, Grandmas secret stuffing recipe, and our families.

Interesting to learn the history of the famous American Thanksgiving dinner. Isn’t it strange how something that starts of so intermittently turns into a regular occasion.

I guess everyone loves a celebration!

Pumpkin pie has clearly been part of the American diet for centuries.

Thanks for some great Thanksgiving history. We all know that after the Indians helps the settlers to survive there were numerous and repeated injustices against the Indians for many years.

I knew it happened, but I guess I never realized it had happened so SOON after the first Thanksgiving. The fact that in 1644 (as little as 20 years later) there would be a massacre of Indians followed by a Thanksgiving dinner is both ironic and very sad.

  • Thanks for wonderful history of Thanksgiving Fran.

It is time for American football, couple of cold ones and deep fried turkey.

    What is your plan Fran?

    • Fran Aslam:

      Hi Adam:

My plan is to watch and enjoy the pleasure of everyone’s company. My children and their children will come over. I do not have deep fried Turkey, and I have prepared the dinner myself. However the day goes in a festive mood by everyone, besides some serious minutes of praying, by everyone.

Adam you enjoy the first thanksgiving with your sweet lovely daughter and family too.

      Happy Thanksgiving

  • Hi Fran,

Thanks for the interesting summary of Thanksgiving history. It’s a pity though that Thanksgiving has a massacre associated with it.

Well, thanksgiving is just around the corner… and that reminds me that I have some work to do on my thanksgiving challenge too :-)

Wishing you a happy and fulfilling Thanksgiving!

  • Fran,

Thanks for the wishes. Well, I do not really celebrate Thanksgiving as it is meant to be, as I am not living in the US of A or Canada. As for thanking all the blessings, I sure am working on it as part of the ongoing thanksgiving challenge, and it’s been a gratifying experience so far.

You too have a wonderful one!

How interesting! I have never heard this version of Thanksgiving before, only the one where all the pilgrims and indians sat down together to eat a huge feast. I had no idea of the true beginnings of the holiday. And yes, we celebrate our families and everything we have, as we as football! and shopping! and the giant floating turkey! Thanks for the history lesson, always fun!

    • Fran Aslam:

  • Good day!!!! Happy Thanksgiving!! .!! :) :) :)
Thanksgiving is 1 of my favorite holidays, and each year I like to get into the mood-extend the holiday, as it were-by reading “Thanksgiving novels.” Of course, those stories are mostly about family, about coming together to heal old hurts and giving them thanks for the gift of love. . . . –

I love this holiday for both of these reason’s. One for the great food on thanksgiving and two the amazing sales you can get on black Friday. I hate braving the malls but the sales are worth the frustration.
