November 2011 Calendar and Health Awareness
November 2011 Calendar and Health Awareness
November is an important month for goal oriented activities, even at the social and national levels. Health awareness promotion is important for the health and well being of everyone. Therefore it is a busy month for health awareness experts. Here are some of the details
1. American Diabetes Month
Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder which causes problems with the absorption of blood sugar. Depending on personal physical condition this happens when
- Body does not produce enough insulin
- Body produces insulin but it is not used
- Insulin produced is much less than needed by the body
Diabetes is a chronic disease. It is a major disorder of the body that influences lifestyle and effort to come over this disease. Once all the preventive measures and plans are applied to overcome diabetes, the medication requirement is reduced – all as a result of eating right amount of food at one time and selecting the most suitable foods along with daily exercise for normal blood sugar range. Diabetes prevention is extremely important.
Diabetes Statistics
1. About 21 million Americans, 7 % of the population have this disease.
2. Another 47 million, including 2million 12-19 year old have pre diabetic condition.
3. 1990 to 2002 diabetes increased more than 14%. 60 year and older nearly one out of five has diabetes.
4. Diabetes is the only disease with death rate still rising. Diabetics, may turn blind, loose a foot or leg, may have kidney failure, develop coronary disease and stroke. The chances of Alzheimer’s are more than double.
Because of all these reasons diabetes prevention is very important, more important than any other disease as it completely destroys normal life. Diabetes awareness for pre diabetics and those who do not have diabetes is very important. So, they try their best prevention effort and may not get this disease.
November is the month to promote this awareness message to every one.
2. COPD Disease Awareness Month
COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, occurs when inhaling and exhaling for breathing airways and air sacs (in the lungs) lose their elastic quality, breathing becomes hard and this obstruction is called COPD disease.
COPD is listed as number four in the top death causing disease in the USA. It causes one death every 4 minutes somewhere in USA.
The risk factors for this diseases are:
- Smoking and over 40 years of age or over.
- Have worked or lived around chemicals or fumes
- Have medical genetics with COPD
- Feeling short of breath, chronic persistent cough, and having trouble doing every day tasks like using stairs.
First prevention is to talk to your health provider about it. Ask the doctor to have a general breathing test, quitting smoking, avoiding pollutants, avoiding air pollution getting flue and phenomena shots is the basic prevention.
November 2011 awareness has a theme for COPD “Learn more breathe better” this is the national awareness and campaign eduction for this year. Do your share by knowing more about this disease and use prevention for yourself and your family.
3. National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month
Alzheimer’s is a type of deterioration of logical and intellectual activity ( like thinking remembering, reasoning, and using language) of the mind that causes problems to an individual and this ability goes down slowly and can turn worse with time. Alzheimer’s test is recommended to test if signs of Alzheimer’s are noticed by friends and family.
Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in United States. Those with Alzheimer’s live almost eight years after it becomes noticeable. Alzheimer’s treatment is based on the history of individual patient and test results. There is a world wide effort to find a cure for Alzheimer’s Efforts and researches are going on in United States too and donations to the causes will add your contribution to it. So do your share, get preventive information and use it. Alzheimer’s stages start slowly and progress with time.
There are several other health awareness activities for November 2011. Following is a list of these .
4. National Hospice month
5. National Healthy Skin month
6. Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness month
7. National Allied Health Week
8. Diabetic Eye Disease Month
9. Food Health Issues Related to Diabetes
10. Lung Cancer Awareness month
11. National Family Caregivers Month
12. National Stomach Cancer Awareness Month
13. Drowsy Driving Prevention Week
14. Get Smart About Antibiotics Week
My focus is going to be on Diabetes now. It is a disease for everyone, children, teens, adults and seniors. Once onsets for anyone you have to live with it all your life. With extreme care and attention it can be maintained for life which seems to be very hard to attain by average people. But there are some diabetics who have used every trick in the book and are living a healthy life style. Persistence in watching blood sugars few times a day, plan eating time following type 2 diabetes diet daily exercise and taking insulins as needed is the best way.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Diabet is a terrible disease, I have first-hand knowledge of it. Because my friend’s mother has this disease. And there is always a big fear that they won’t have insulin, or that something will happen

Jeanie you are right, it is a terrible disease, today everyone knows someone who has diabetes, since it is as high as one out of every five. What makes me feel bad is the fact that it can destroy any part of the victom’s body, heart kidneys, digestion, feet eyes, along with so much care that takes the sick persons time and the famil and friends of the diabetic person. I am glad you know it, now the next step is to make sure that you don’t get it. Take all the preventive measures. Enjoy your week end. Fran A
It’s good to know that you’ll focus on Diabetes. It’s a global problem that needs to pay attention to. Most people are aware that it can be controlled but there are some who lacks knowledge about this disease.

The more I think about it the more I feel desperate to do something special to redcue diabetes negative impact from our lives. Your support is a postive boost to my efforts. To your professional success Fran A
If we’re on the topic of Alzheimer, maybe this could help. I read somewhere last week that learning a foreign language can significantly delay Alzheimer. It doesn’t prevent it, but it’s still better than nothing. It probably keeps the brain working, not sure exactly.
The article made me feel safer, since i’m currently learning my 3rd language.

Alzheimer is a great topic, Beth all activities that have to do with thinking, remembering, reading learning, and keep doing the samething again and again promote Alzheimer prevention. Playing word games and playing puzzles also promotes Alzheimer prevention. I will try to add more on Alzheimer’s for you.
Thanks for your comment. Enjoy your week end. Fran A

For me, I think every month should be Health Awareness month! Health is one of those things that if you don’t have, then you’re as good as dead.

I didn’t realize November was American Diabetes month, I just happened to read an article that said being a vegetarian can help prevent diabetes. What do you think?
Hi Karen
Being a vagen does not necessarily mean that you are okay with diabetes, as diebetes starts because your body is not able to break down carbs sugar and fat.
In this condition, it is a good idea to eat lean protein, in every meal or you will stay hungry. If you will stay hungry body will crave food and mindless eating starts that makes a person obese. Obesity is one of the major cause of diabetes. So it is a vicious circle.
What I suggest is add more fruits and veges to your meals, and less carbs. As Michelle Obama, the first lady has introduced the plate system to figure out a healthy meal to keep away from all problems. Before a person turns diabetic, he/she is a pre diabetic for almost 10 years. If situation is paid attention at that time, diabetes does not attack at all. Just a regular check up is very important.
Genetics play a role too. My latest pot has all thes details. Thanks for the comment. Fran A
What is Diabetic Eye Disease? That does not tie in with Diabetes month as a whole?
All smaller body parts that have smaller blood vessels, face problems when during diabetes, the blood circulates with high sugar level, as these blood streams are extremely narrow and blood circulation becomes a problems and these small parts of the body suffer, this includes, eyes, kidneys, sex organs etc. Some diabetics can not even get a driving liscence because of in correct vision.
